Since 1978 players from Europe battle for the Europe cup. Traditionally the English have been dominant in the history of darts, this tournament is no different. John Lowe is the only player who has won the singles three times, adding them to two pairs titles with his regular pairs partner Eric Bristow. Still there have been a lot of surprise champions in the singles. Between 1998 and 2002 global sub top players like Co Stompé, Mitchell Crooks and Peter Johnstone win the title. For the Netherlands besides Stompé, van Barneveld wins the title in 2004. Together they win the pairs in 2000 and van Barneveld repeats that performance in 2006 together with Vincent van der Voort. In the pairs competition its Sweden’s Stefan Lord who is most successful of them all. He wins the tournament in 1980, 1982 en 1988. Martin Adams will do the same in the later years of 2002, 2008 and 2010. In the ladies competition so far only Francis Hoenselaar has been able to take the title three times. Sue Edwards and Trina Gulliver both lift the trophy twice. Still in the ladies competition there have been some surprise victories too. In 1998 for instance Denise Cassidy from Northern Ireland wins the title. In pairs The Netherlands were victorious twice in 2000 and 2002 when Hoenselaar and Krappen win. It’s no coincidence that Holland brings the overall ladies championship home in those years too. A feat repeated by the men’s team in 2004 and 2006.
