Russ has, like so many of today’s top referees, started as a referee because during a county match the regular caller didn’t turn up. Bray is well known for his rough voice, loved by many, not so by some. Bray calls at the PDC since the 1996 World Matchplay. He has called Phil Taylor’s first nine darter during the 2002 World Matchplay against Chris Mason and Michael van Gerwen’s one during the 2007 Masters of Darts in Hengelo. In June 2007 he added to those with Taylor’s nine darter vs. Wes Newton and a year later Taylor's against Jamie Harvey. Bray is a regular on the exhibition circuit with various PDC players.
