Known as the FA Cup of darts, because players from all levels can participate. There is a series of preliminary rounds for the professionals in pubs all over Britain. The top 96 go into the main event plus a number of qualifiers who win through pub playoffs. All qualifiers gather in June to play at the Reebok stadium in Bolton on 8 stages simultaneously. Because of the short format and random draw there are usually lots of surprises. It has also proved to be a good breeding ground for new talent in the PDC. Proof of the surprising nature of the tournament can be obtained when you look at the run of finalists. Shayne Burgess gets to the final in 2003 in his latter career. Mark Walsh, Barrie Bates, Vincent van der Voort and Gary Mawson are further proof that the underdog is capable of having a good run to the final. The tournament has been played 9 times, with 3 Dutch winners. Dutchman Roland Scholten wins in 2004, and in 2006 and 2007 Raymond van Barneveld is the strongest. Phil Taylor lifts the trophy four times and the other two times its James Wade who's crowned champion. Van Barneveld beats Phil Taylor in the quarter final of 2006 for the first time after a long losing streak to Taylor and it was his first TV tournament win since his defection from the BDO. |
