By 2002, darts in the Netherlands had become so popular, that it was about time a major television tournament was produced. Ad Schoofs, the manager of Raymond van Barneveld is the inspiration behind the first World Darts Trophy. It’s location, the ice rink Vechtsebanen in Utrecht. The system of play followed British example, and had an identical format to the Embassy. Coincidently that year, the two events would have the same winner. Australian Tony David was the first crowned champion, taking a disappointing final 6-0 against unknown Englishman at the time, Tony O’Shea. To be fair, O’Shea had a great tournament and was responsible for beating tournament favourite van Barneveld in the semi finals. Barney returns however to win the championship in 2003 & 2004. A BDO sanctioned event, but in 2006 PDC players get access to play. This has immediate effect as it’s Phil Taylor who walks away champion beating Martin Adams in the final. The following year he again makes the final only to lose to Scotland’s Gary Anderson. The most surprise victor is without doubt Gary Robson; who lifted the World Darts Trophy in 2005. In 2008 the PDC withdraw their players from the tournament and with that intrest from Dutch TV also disappears. After a long legal battle the WDT is cancelled 'for now'.
