In 1981 this tournament is held for the First time. The tournament is played according to the same principal as the Embassy but only open to British based players. In 1981 the venue is the Fiesta Club in Stockton; in 1982 it’s transferred to the Gaskins-Plus-One club in Middlesbrough. This venue however burns down five weeks before the tournament is held in 1983. From that year onwards all the remaining editions are held in the Coatham Bowl in Redcar. The tournament is held 8 times and always won by a seeded player. No less than four times Scottish fan favourite Jocky Wilson lifts the crown, legendary Eric Bristow wins it twice. The two remaining names on the trophy are Keith Deller and Mike Gregory. Jocky Wilson is banned from the tournament in 1982 because of a suspension by the BDO regarding conduct unbecoming a darts player. Therefore he is unable to defend his title. In the eight year history of the tournament there is only one non-Brit playing in it. In 1985 Australia’s Terry O’Dea participates, as during those years he lived in England. The Unipart, as the tournament is known, is last held in 1988. Like the MFI World Matchplay the reason is that television, in this case the BBC, don’t renew the contract and the BDO is unable to find another TV company willing to broadcast it.
