Arguably the most controversial darts event ever held was the Masters of Darts in 2005. In a world where BDO and PDC are at war, it was in Holland where the masters of darts were set up. Launched as a battle of codes, though the BDO put much pressure on many of their members not to play. The starting prize money of €25000 is high but still some BDO players decline the invite. Taylor, Lloyd, Scholten & Mardle play for the PDC. Barney, Fordham, David & Stompé play for the BDO. The BDO players win more matches than their PDC rivals. Highlight of the week is when the two best players in the world at that time, Taylor and Barney, play in front of a massive crowd of 4800 crazy Duchies. Lowlight of the tournament is when on the same night Barney was heckled by his own “fans”. Taylor wins that match 4-0 and wins the event. In 2007 the event returns to Hengelo, this time not as a battle of codes but as a battle of nations. England is way too strong for Holland, but Barney gets sporting revenge beating Taylor and winning the tournament. He leaves the stage with fans cheering him on. Michael van Gerwen became the youngest player ever to achieve a 9 dart finish on TV against Barney in the semi final, but to no avail as he still loses the match.
